Chanel, one of the most successful fashion houses, owes much to Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel (1883–1971), whose famous designs—such as the two-piece suit, the little black dress, and the quilted handbag—remain in style to this day. She designed primarily for herself and created clothing for an independent lifestyle that anticipated the needs of the modern woman. This book presents a selection of Chanel’s most famous designs from her 60-year career in fashion, drawn primarily from the collections of the Patrimoine de CHANEL in Paris and the V&A. It explores the cut, construction, and origins of the ensembles, as well as recurring design motifs. New photographs by Nicholas Alan Cope and archival images capture Chanel’s unique world of fashion.
